It started with my father. When he retired from the bank after
38 years, something shifted. He lost more than a job—he lost
identity. I watched someone who'd been confident and structured
suddenly become uncertain, spending days unsure of what came
next. That's when I realized retirement coaching wasn't about
finances. It was about life.
After finishing my Social Work degree at University College
Galway in 2010, I worked in community development across Galway
and County Clare for a decade. But it wasn't until 2015, when I
partnered with the first Men's Shed program in Galway, that
everything clicked. I saw what happens when you give people
purpose, community, and something tangible to work on.
Depression lifted. Loneliness disappeared. Men showed up because
they wanted to—not because they had to.
That experience changed my approach completely. I pursued
postgraduate qualifications in Adult Education from Trinity
College Dublin and built a methodology that combines retirement
planning with wellness principles and age-positive psychology.
The result? Guides and coaching programs that address both the
practical side (pensions, lifestyle planning) and the emotional
side (identity, purpose, community engagement).
Today, as Senior Retirement & Wellness Coach at golvantic
Limited, I've worked directly with over 2,000 participants
across structured peer support groups along the Wild Atlantic
Way. Every conversation reinforces the same truth: retirement
readiness isn't something you figure out alone. It's something
you build together.
